A partially zoned crystal bar is shown in Fig. 6. A cross section of the bar before zoning is shown at the right in the photograph. A boron filament which has been completely zoned and mounted in an electrode is shown in Fig. 7. The filament is 13 cm in length. It was prepared by two zone passes in the floating-zone unit, using a crystal bar which had been mechanically slipped from a tantalum filament. It is mounted in a piston - type electrode ready for insertion in the boron tribromide decomposition unit.

Several different methods of preparing boron single crystals have been used. This presentation summarizes this work, describes the crystals obtained, and reports the measurements that have been made. It soon became evident from previous work [1,2] that somewhat larger crystals of boron would be desirable to facilitate various measurements and for possible device applications.
