It had traveled faster, and contained winds of much greater velocity, than anyone had anticipated. By the time I realized the severity of the system that was quickly bearing down on the Hannah Boden, I also realized the severity of my decision to remain at sea in spite of all warnings.

I have to admit that by this time I was so weary of constant bad news and negativism that I terminated, as gently as I could, the remains of our relationship/friendship. I had no regrets about doing so, and only thought of Alan when Alden brought him up. Alden had ordered the rum and Coke and sat anticipating an answer to his question of what had become of Alan. I didn’t find it strange that he should ask about Alan after so much time had elapsed, as the Dry Dock was Alan’s favorite unwinding spot and George and Tommy were two of his closest friends.

The weather was absolutely the worst I had ever encountered, and the motion of the gear was downright dangerous. But what could I do? I could send a man out to cut the lines, allowing the traps to jettison themselves. Too dangerous for 31 ALL FISHERMEN ARE LIARS the man, I decided. Eventually, if the lines continued to slacken, some of the traps would tumble overboard with no help from anyone but Mother Nature, and there would be nothing I could do to prevent that from happening except hope that it wouldn’t, which was what I did.
